Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

Understanding Substance Use Disorder

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a medical condition that impacts the brain and behavior, leading to an inability to control the use of substances such as alcohol, drugs, or prescription medications. SUD is not a personal failure—it is a health issue that can be treated with the right support and resources.

At Central Valley Gender Health and Wellness, we recognize the unique challenges faced by individuals from Queer, Transgender, and People of Color (QTPOC) communities in accessing affirming and effective care for substance use. We are here to provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support for your journey to wellness.

Our Approach to Care

We believe in addressing SUD through a person-centered and trauma-informed approach. Our services focus on creating a safe, affirming environment where individuals can receive care tailored to their needs. Our approach includes:

  • Confidential Support: Protecting your privacy and ensuring you feel safe seeking help.
  • Culturally Responsive Care: Addressing the specific needs of QTPOC individuals and other underserved communities.
  • Integrated Health Services: Connecting you with mental health, physical health, and recovery resources.
  • Peer Support: Building community through shared experiences and mutual encouragement.

Substance Use in California

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) significantly impacts the Queer, Transgender, and People of Color (QTPOC) communities, particularly in California's Central Valley, encompassing cities like Stockton, Modesto, and Merced. While specific data for QTPOC adults in these cities is limited, broader statistics can shed light on the challenges faced by these communities.

  • Prevalence: Approximately 9% of Californians aged 12 and older have experienced a substance use disorder.
    California Health Care Foundation
  • Alcohol Use: Over half of Californians aged 12 and older reported using alcohol, with 23.4% engaging in binge drinking.
    California Health Care Foundation
  • Marijuana Use: 20% of Californians reported using marijuana.

Challenges in the Central Valley

While specific data on QTPOC individuals in Stockton, Modesto, and Merced is limited, the Central Valley faces unique challenges:

  • Healthcare Access: Rural areas in the Central Valley often have limited access to culturally competent healthcare services, making it difficult for QTPOC individuals to find providers who understand their specific needs.
  • Stigma and Discrimination: QTPOC individuals may encounter stigma related to both their substance use and their identities, which can deter them from seeking help.
  • Economic Disparities: Higher rates of poverty in certain Central Valley areas can limit access to treatment and support services.

Importance of Culturally Competent Care

Providing culturally competent care is essential for effectively addressing SUD in QTPOC communities. This includes:

  • Inclusive Services: Offering services that respect and affirm all aspects of an individual's identity.
  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with local QTPOC organizations to ensure services are relevant and accessible.
  • Education and Training: Ensuring that healthcare providers are trained in cultural competency to better serve QTPOC individuals.

Harm Reduction is Queer Culture

Harm Reduction at CVGHW

At CVGHW, we champion harm reduction through the lived experiences of Queer, Transgender, and People of Color (QTPOC) communities. Led by a trans Latina, our programs prioritize the health, dignity, and empowerment of individuals disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities. Our Harm Reduction Program provides tools, education, and resources to reduce risks, foster safety, and support self-determination.

What is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is a holistic, evidence-based approach that recognizes health and safety as fundamental rights. By addressing the unique challenges faced by QTPOC individuals, we aim to create spaces where everyone can access care without stigma or barriers.

Our Harm Reduction Initiatives

Safe Supplies Distribution

  • Free access to clean kits, and tools to reduce the spread of HIV, Hepatitis C, and other health risks.
  • Safe disposal containers to promote personal and community safety.

Naloxone (Narcan) Distribution and Training

  • Free naloxone kits to reverse opioid overdoses, empowering individuals and allies to save lives.
  • Training programs designed with QTPOC experiences in mind, fostering community-based overdose response.

Fentanyl and Xylazine Test Strips

  • Free fentanyl test strips to detect dangerous opioids in substances and reduce the risk of accidental overdose.
  • Access to xylazine test strips to identify the presence of this harmful sedative, often mixed with opioids, and education on its unique risks.
  • Clear instructions and community education on how to use both tools effectively.

QTPOC-Centered Education and Advocacy

  • Interactive workshops on harm reduction, substance use safety, and the systemic challenges faced by QTPOC individuals.
  • Outreach to schools, shelters, and grassroots organizations to distribute resources and provide education.

Supportive Services and Referrals

  • Trauma-informed counseling and connections to mental health services, substance use treatment, and recovery programs.
  • Resources addressing housing instability, reentry challenges, and other systemic barriers that disproportionately affect QTPOC individuals.

Inclusive Peer Support Networks

  • Peer-led groups offering support, understanding, and shared resources in a safe, affirming environment.

Why Harm Reduction Matters for QTPOC Communities

The intersection of substance use, systemic inequities, and discrimination uniquely impacts QTPOC individuals. Our harm reduction initiatives not only aim to save lives but also empower individuals to reclaim their health, safety, and agency in a system often designed to exclude them.

How to Access Harm Reduction Services

All harm reduction resources are provided free of charge and tailored to the unique needs of QTPOC individuals and their allies.

Together, we can create a community that prioritizes safety, equity, and compassion for everyone.
